Knowing the purpose of different jackets will help you dress more appropriately. Clothes have a silent language that speaks for you & tend to make a strong visual statement on others and acing your attire will only make this statement come out stronger.
Different jackets have a different level of formality. Wearing a sports jacket where you are expected to wear a suit jacket is not only unprofessional but also disrespectful. If you want to keep being unprofessional, that’s your prerogative but if you want to make a statement that too a strong one, keep on reading. If you aren't a fan of reading, worry not! you can watch the video! We take care of our audience's needs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pcbLwuyIso&t=73s Let's look at the SUIT JACKET first, This is the most formal jacket out of all the three & probably the most commonly owned jacket by men.
A suit jacket is worn along with trousers made out of exact swatch of fabric with comparatively tighter and closer fit for the reason that they are ideally not meant to be layered. But you can play by the rules and layer it if needed.
They are made from lighter weight, higher quality fabrics such as worsted wool, linen, silk and cashmere.
Given the formality of the piece, suit jackets are mostly found in solid colours, most common being navy blue. Other colours are charcoal grey, light grey, and black.
If you already own suits in solid colours, it’s time to invest in textures & patterns such as pin-stripes or checks.
Next on the list - THE BLAZER JACKET was initially worn by the member of clubs.
Blazers come in many colour variants and are primarily made out of wool. If you want to buy just one blazer make it navy!
Their buttons are mostly made of metal or brass often with some embossed designs. They are the most versatile of all three and can be styled in many different ways.
Grey flannel trousers look excellent with a navy blue blazer. You can also team them up with Khaki pants. If you want an informal option, you can go ahead pick up your favourite pair of denim to team it up with the blazer. For all the experimental dandies out there, you can consider wearing coloured pants in red and green.
A prior warning, this look is not for someone with a feeble heart!
Last but definitely not the least - THE SPORTS JACKET
Back in the day, sports jackets were worn by gentlemen during sporting events such as polo races or shooting.
For the days when you want to look sharp but also need functionality in your attire. Although it is the least formal of the three but is definitely a staple for the chic casual style.
As compared to a suit jacket, a sports jacket is loosely structured and has a bit of a room for layering. Sports jacket generally have elbow patches, earlier they had a functional purpose i.e. to protect gentleman when they indulged in sporting activities. Nowadays they have been reduced only fulfil the aesthetic purpose.
Sports jacket comes in a variety of prints and designs. Most commonly used fabrics for sports jacket are herringbone, houndstooth, shepherd’s checks, Flannel and Tweed. Now to summarise although these jackets overall might not look extremely apart from each other in appearance and structure, however, the purpose of each jacket sets them apart. There’s no one jacket better than the other. The choice of the jacket depends upon the formality and requirement of the occasion. That's it for today ill see you next week with yet another blog.
